While praying for my boys’ future relationships with women, not once did someone that looked like this Bratz doll enter my mind or prayers. Who wants to marry someone like that? It is hard for boys these days…I feel bad getting the VS catalog…. Commercials are as sexual as the rated R movies from our teen years. It’s become a wackadoo world.

Dusty, I don’t have girls but I have 26 and 16 year old sons. The oldest used to bring girls home to meet me when he lived here. I’d often wonder if the parents saw what they looked like before they left! Come on, you’re going to meet his MOTHER! Thank the Lord that the last (and hopefully permanent) one is more modest. I’m just sayin’… I suppose you’re not old enough to remember “hot pants”, but I was a teenager when they were in style – butt cheeks used to hang out. I wasn’t allowed to wear them. It bothered me then but I’m sho glad they made that decision for me.

I agree completely. I have two awesome boys and one beautiful little baby girl. Jeff and I also abundantly worship and praise our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I may be even more extreme to the point that I feel that Barbie shouldn’t be introduced until later in a little girl’s life. We have celebrated many little girl’s birthdays through friends and family and they are in to Barbie and I just can’t do it. If they are 8 or under they get Strawberry Shortcake or My Little Pony from Aunt Mandy. Society is so fixed on what they perceive a woman should look like. I even have trouble with a realistic weight and style that is good for me and I was a little girl in the 70′s. It seems so much worse now that I want my kids to know that God created them perfect in His image and they should always be happy with what God has given them. I’m sure it will make me unpopular as well but that’s the lick I am ready to take for the sake of security on my childrens conscience about how they perceive themselves.

When those dolls first came out several years ago and my Emma was probably the age of your little girl, I said “NO WAY.” As she grew, I would, in way she could understand, explain why she couldn’t have those dolls. She never questioned and never complained. There are so many good alternatives. Last year my mom gave her a beach towel with the Bratz on it and she told her, “my mom doesn’t let me play with these dolls.” But I did let her keep the towel.
The old saying “What is right is not always popular, what is popular is not always right” applies to the decisions we as moms have to make.
They (our kids) may not always understand our decisions but one day they will and “they will rise up and call her blessed.”

I don’t have little girls but as the Mother of 2 boys I pray that they will choose someone that has many wonderful qualities and virtue is at the top of the list. Stand firm even if it makes you unpopular for now. Your daughter will thank you later (even if its muuuuuuch later):)

P.S. My new favorite T.V. show is “Jon & Kate plus 8″ and she says “no Bratz dolls” for her 5 girls too.

Love your blog – I’ve been reading and smiling and nodding and happy to read all you share! I have two girls and refuse to buy Bratz dolls or items – though I haven’t refused them accepting a couple of them as gifts. We’ve discussed in depth their respecting themselves and bringing glory to God in how they conduct themselves. I see their virtue now at 8 and 5 years old (especially with Mom and Dad making decisions for them) and pray that they make the same good choices for themselves and Him when they are teens. You are right – it starts young! Thanks for sharing!

You will have to make decisions on Anna and JH’s part until they are almost grown. No, it doesn’t make you popular BUT you are the MOTHER and not trying to win a popularity contest! Just know that as a mother of a boy and a girl (just like me) , there is NO double standard in this house! It’s not easy sticking to your guns on issues but you and Kris and Bryan have to be united and back each other up or they will start playing one of you against the other. Oh, yeah, and by the time they are 25, they will all of a sudden realize just how smart you have become! Try ordering her a “My Twin” doll. You send in a picture of Anna and they make a doll that looks like her and they have matching clothes for the doll and Anna…I think even matching night gowns!!!!!
