New Book. New Thought.

After my doctor’s appointment yesterday checking up on the littlest Takle, I had an hour or so to spare.   Barnes and Noble sounded more than appealing.  And quiet.  And they had a book waiting for me with my name on it.

Not to mention some hot chocolate at the Café.

Cindy Beall has been talking a lot about the book, “Leading On Empty.”  Wayne Cordeiro wrote the book with leaders in mind; however, it’s an incredible book for moms, dads, college students, doctors, garbage collectors…..

Anyone.

Wayne Cordeiro suffered from burn-out, and he shares his journey on “refilling (his) tank and renewing (his) passion.”  And, we are all susceptible to burn-out.

I’ll share more on the book once I finish it.  But, I’m really excited about the read.

One statement in the introduction Cordeiro writes is, “Suffering will change us, but not necessarily for the better.  We have to choose that.  And it was that choosing that made all the difference for me.”

Many of us have experienced suffering on some level.  For me, my divorce was just that.  But, I didn’t become defined by my divorce.  I’m not “Dusty, the divorced chick.”

I am “Dusty, the restored, wife, mother, and child of God.”

So, if you’re going through the fire right this moment, choose to let it change you for the better.

And, on that note, have a great weekend!

Picking Up The Mantle

My dad is currently covering a series on the prophet, Elisha.  Here is a guy who had so much anointing in his dead bones that they revived another corpse that had been thrown into his tomb.  (2 Kings 13:21)   That’s kind of a big deal.  I mean, what do you have to do to die and leave this kind of anointing behind?  According to the life of Elisha, you have to serve in another man’s field – the way he did for Elijah.  You have to seek this kind of anointing with your own blood, sweat, and tears the way Elisha did.  And, you have to be willing to pick up the mantle God places on you.  Or, in some cases, pick up the mantle when it’s passed onto you.

I emphasize “when”, because I see so many men and women in ministry itching to pick up a mantle that hasn’t even been passed to them instead of picking up a mantle that God already placed inside them long ago.  Good examples of “when” are the Joel Osteens, Ed Youngs, and Andy Stanleys of the world who had fathers to pass on their mantle.

The fact of the matter is, God has given each of us a mantle – a calling.  We can run our entire lives and never pick it up.  God won’t give it to someone else, but He’ll certainly allow someone else to operate in your place.  Someone may wait until the latter years of his life to pick up his mantle.  Another may never pick up hers.  Others, from an early age, will pick theirs up and begin operating in it the way God intended.

Elisha wasn’t below serving in another man’s field.  He gave his life to doing the work of the Father, even when it made sense to do otherwise.  And, when the mantle fell, he picked it up with obedience and fulfilled the call of God on his life.

What would the scriptures look like had Elisha not been obedient?  What would have that next generation looked like?  It’s a scary thought.

What will this generation look like if we don’t pick up our mantles and operate in the gifts and callings Christ has given us?

There is a mantle lying on the ground waiting for you to pick it up.  God has given you a gift to use for His Kingdom.  So, when you leave this earth, your anointing remains and affects another generation.

Have you picked up your mantle?

The Faith Life.

I asked John Henry last night what he is learning or wants to learn about God right now.  His answer?

FAITH.

“What is faith?”  I asked him.

“I don’t really know,” he said.

So, I explained to him “the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen” in terms his six year old mind can understand.

Several years ago, my dad gave me a book called The Real Faith by Charles S. Price.  Price states, “You can’t have faith without results any more than you can have motion without movement.”

I fail to walk in this kind of faith every day.  Sorry to disappoint.  But, I have learned a key to my faith life is my talk life.  That’s right.  My talk life.  Joshua 1:8 says “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.”  Both scripture and human experience teaches us the power of our words.  So, when our hearts are full of God’s Word, then we are always armed and ready to encounter any threat to our faith.

Whether it’s bad news or a just a bad day.

My talk life and faith life aren’t perfect.  But, I know the more I fall in love with His Word, the more I will walk by faith.

Lead Me To The Rock.

I don’t often stare at a blank, white screen as long as I stared at one for this post.  It was an emotional evening with my son yesterday.  This pregnancy seems to be drawing from John Henry some emotions and questions about his Daddy Bryan and me.  And, one particular issue I wasn’t prepared for.  It’s not something I feel at liberty to share just yet, but I will when the time is right.  For now, my heart is heavy, and I’m seeking God in how I respond to my sweet, tender son.

You see, this is the beautiful part about following Christ.  Because, whenever I feel….

Helpless.

Confused.

Stranded.

In desperate need of wisdom and guidance.

I go to my Shepherd.

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.  I will advise you and watch over you.  Psalm 32:8

I go to my Counselor.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.  John 14:16

I go to my Rock.

….when my heart is overwhelmed.  Lead me to the towering rock of safety….  Psalm 61:2

Can you imagine doing life without Him?

Our Real House.

Anna:  “Mom, this isn’t our real house.  Our real house is in heaven.”

I am still baffled as to why those words were uttered by my four year old.  It’s a topic yet to be discussed between the two of us.  And, to be honest, I didn’t seize the beautiful opportunity to elaborate on the subject any further than a simple, “Yes.  You’re right.”

So, I left it at that.

Two days passed, and I replayed her verbal observation in my head.  And, these scriptures came to mind:

19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.  20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.  21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.  Matthew 6:19-21

A good self check-up followed.  Am I investing more of my energy into my earthly, temporal home than I am into my “real house”?

There are days I invest more generously into the Kingdom than my own material possessions.  Yet, there are days where I can become consumed with what makes Dusty happy.  And, I’m not just talking about money.  Although, finances are a big part of it.  I’m also referring to my time.  Time spent alone with my Father.  Time spent imparting Christ to my children.  Time spent serving the local church.  Time spent ministering to someone in need.  Time spent using my gifts for the Kingdom.

I want to store up treasures in my real house.  Because, this temporal house is but a vapor.

Isn’t it funny how God uses our children to speak to us?

Where are you storing your treasures?

What I’m Praying This School Year.

JH - 2004

Dear John Henry,

You begin first grade today.  I can hardly believe it.  Really, I can’t.  If it weren’t for the fact you’ve lost four teeth, grown another inch, and expanded your vocabulary, I’d swear you are still the little boy in this picture mesmerized by airplanes.

Airplanes don’t capture your attention the way they used to.  I’m sure it’s due to the constant exposure and your Daddy Kris being a pilot.  Although, I know you still think that being a pilot is cool.  You do, right?

It’s okay if airplanes and other things begin to fade from your interest list.  What’s important is that your pursuit of Christ doesn’t fade.  That being in relationship with your Creator never grows stale.  Never gets old.

That He always captures your attention.

I prayed the usual prayer I always pray over you last night.  But, just before I said, “Amen,” I prayed something new for you.

I prayed you would begin to hear God’s voice

You know that feeling you sometimes get to make a good choice instead of a bad choice?  Or that feeling you sometimes get to give one of your toys to a friend?  Or that feeling you sometimes get to pray for someone?  That’s kind of what God’s voice sounds like at times.

I’m praying that His voice becomes clearer and clearer to you.

Familiar.

Comfortable.

Natural.

That’s what I’m praying for you this school year.

I can’t wait to hear what God tells you.  I know He will tell you what I tell you so often:

I love you, son.

I’ve Got Some Practicing To Do.

Well, my book, The Practice of the Presence of God, arrived yesterday, and I’m already halfway through.  No need to be impressed.  It’s an itty bitty book.

It’s principally about enjoying the presence of God while engaging in the routine things in life….like doing the dishes.  Or feeding the dog.  Or bathing your four-year old.  Or consuming a box of Junior Mints.  It’s the practice of recognizing His presence even outside the Sunday experience or your quiet devotional time.  This, Brother Lawrence says, takes practice.  But, living our life acknowledging the presence of God in the big and small things will not only bring us unbelievable joy, but it will sure us up in knowing that with Him, all things truly are possible.

One key in practicing His presence is doing away with any thoughts or actions that do NOT lead us or point us toward Christ.  He writes, “the most important part resides in renouncing, once and for all, whatever does not lead to God.  This allows us to become involved in a continuous conversation with Him in a simple and unhindered manner….

All we have to do is recognize God as being intimately present within us.”

When I read this, I had to consider the feelings and thoughts that come up when certain situations arise.  Does that thought or does my action or response LEAD me to God?  I’d bet the envy that I feel over her six-pack abs does not lead me to God.  Nor does my judgment over how he handled a situation.  And, the way I over-react to my children, at times….well, I’d bet that’s not leading me to God.

And, the occasional pride issue that creeps up?  Well, let’s not even go there.

But, actually, I must go there.

I must go to these things that hinder me from experiencing His presence in every single thing I do.  I have to catch myself when these thoughts that aren’t of Him rear their ugly heads.  And, denounce them.  Then, maybe I can experience Him the way He created me to experience Him.

Oh, the conversations I’m sure we’ll have when I begin to practice His presence.

I think I’m going to like this book.  ‘Cause I sure like His presence.

What’s On Your Nightstand?

I had intended on writing this post last night, but I sat up and listened to some insightful, and sometimes funny, exchanges between my dad and his pastor friend of more than thirty years, Ron Gray.  And, then a little prego sickness postponed my morning writing.  Thankyousokindly, Caffeine-Free Coke.   I could not survive without your faithfulness.

I usually read at night before I close my eyes.  Obviously, before I close my eyes.  I have a few books awaiting my attention.  Bill Hybel’s Axiom is one of them.  But, I’m most excited about today’s delivery of The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence.  Yes, Brother Lawrence.  It was originally published in 1982, so if you’ve been in the Church for a while, you’ve probably heard of it or even read it yourself.

I enjoy books on leadership and the occasional novel.  However, right now, I feel compelled to read material that simply draws me closer to my Creator.

What are you reading right now?
What is a book you’ve recently read that you highly recommend, fiction or non?

I Need To Choose Him More.

John Henry:  Why did God make us separated?

Me:  What do you mean?

John Henry:  Why is God in heaven, and He made us on earth?  Why didn’t He make us be together?

I admit.  John Henry’s question caught me by surprise.  Let’s see.  How do I answer this so a six-year old can comprehend?  I could take him back to the garden.  Of course, I risk losing him with that story.  So, I just explained it this way instead:

Had God made us in heaven with Him, we would have no choice but to pursue Him.  {How could we not pursue Him if we saw Him face to face?}  God wants us to CHOOSE Him.  So, here on earth, we have the choice to pursue Him.  We may not see Him, but His Spirit is here with us and inside of us.

Our conversation continued.  And, I was suddenly overwhelmed by a God who wants more than anything for me to always choose Him.

Come close to God, and God will come close to you.  James 4:8a

No Shiny Star Here.

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe…
Philippians 2:14-15

Do everything without complaining?  EVERYTHING???

Pretty sure I’m not shinin’ like a star in the universe every day.

You?
