Shot to the heart.

It’s no secret that I don’t shine in the kitchen.  But, when John Henry told me this, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Me:  John Henry, do you want me to make your Transformers birthday cake?

John Henry:  Can you?

Me:  I can try.

John Henry:  Well.  Okay, but get daddy to help you.  He’s good at making stuff.

It’s as if he’s never tasted my Kraft mac & cheese.

Of course, my cake would probably end up posted here.

I’ve had the pleasure to attend a bible study on Tuesday mornings with some really cool ladies.  She, like, makes breakfast treats for us from scratch.  Then, she brought cute, little homemade muffins this past Tuesday.  I hope they all still love me when I pick up bagels from the bagel shop one day.  ‘Cause they will be bought with love.  Just like Christ bought us with love.  Not to compare purchasing breakfast items with God’s redemption of mankind.  Anyhoo.

How are your skills in the kitchen?  Wanna share a favorite cool weather meal, treat, or recipe?

Sci-Fi Cinema. Of course, it’s real.

I was watching one of the Harry Potter films the other day when I commented, “That sure is pretty.  I wonder where that was filmed?”

Kris answered, “I believe that’s all fake, honey.”

Well, thanks for ruining it for me.

I suppose he thinks Wolverine can’t really heal himself either.

I love science fiction.  It’s a bit odd since I really didn’t care for science in high school – although, I was nominated for Governor’s Honors in Chemistry.  I turned such perceived geeky honors down.  Why would I spend a large portion of my summer studying something other than friends and cinema?  For real.

I guess next I’ll hear that Yoda isn’t real and E.T. did not really phone home.

Some people are so incredulous.   Incredulous.  I love that word.  Not sure what I’d do without the synonym checker thingy.  Thingy.  An actual word – as is thingamajig, doodad, thingamabob and doohickey.  I swear.

You are all so sweet to still be reading at this point.  This post is pretty pathetic.  Better luck tomorrow.

Do you like sci-fi films?  If so, what’s your favorite?

Game Day

Tomorrow, people from obscure little towns to major cities around this nation will unite with their team colors of choice in stands, on college parking lots, in sports bars, and in living rooms of friends.

To lift up their team mascot to the Lord.

To inhale chicken wings and chips.

To yell at coaches and players who cannot hear their words of sideline advice.

To talk smack.

‘Because it’s the only American thing to do when the coin is tossed.

Kick-off is upon us folks.  I like to talk smack about my Georgia Dawgs to these crazy Sooner fans out here.  But, I must be honest.  If my number one ranked Bulldogs don’t pull through tomorrow, I will be okay.  Because, I, too will have inhaled my fair share of a fine football spread – whether I’m watching the game or not.  And, let’s face it.  Nothing is quite as satisfying as chips and queso.

To my Georgia friends and family – and even my crazy Sooner friends and adopted family:

Goooooooooo Dawgs!  Sick ‘em.

Hunker down.

What are you doing game day?

Mix Tape

I love music.  I know a lot of music.  As a matter of fact, a lot of my friends call me for their musical needs.  Oh, no.  Not to play or sing.  Although, I do love belting out “Proud Mary” and “Bobby McGee” on the karaoke circuit.   It’s sad really.  It’s where I live out the “what if” factor.  What if I had become the Britney Spears of the eighties?   Never mind.

Anyway, some of my friends call me when they need some ideas for a song for this or a song for that.  And, I bring it.  ‘Cause I love music.   Although, two kids and age are beginning to interfere with my musical knowledge base.  I must overcome.

I’ll never forget my first cassette player.  It looked something like this.

I would hold it up to a radio and as soon as a favorite song came on, I simultaneously pressed the “Record” and “Play” buttons.  Memba that?  Of course, I always missed the first 10 seconds of the song, but that didn’t matter.  I still sang and danced to my mix tape like it was 1985.

And, a single mix tape took H.O.U.R.S. to make.  You pretty much had to stay cuddled up to your radio for as long as it took.  But, once you finished, you had a flawless arrangement of Culture Club, Journey, Rick Springfield, and of course, The Police.

Fast forward a couple of years later.  My parents gave me the most darling pink boombox for my thirteenth birthday.  Yes.  I said boombox.  Not only did it have a cassette player, but it had a radio, too.  The world of making a mix tape became revolutionized.

I will still make a mix tape.  It’s an art.  Now, I just select my music from my iTunes library and burn a CD.  John Henry, my musical prodigy in the making, requests frequently for a new music CD.  And, I don’t hesitate in making him one.  Because, he has got the music in him.  Yes, he does.

Now, a mix tape is called a playlist.  Here are some songs on my most recent playlist:

“Burnin’ Up” – Jonas Brothers (I’d like to claim this one for my children.  I said I’d like to.)
“Shake It” – Metro Station
“Viva la Vida” – Coldplay
“Hosanna” – Christy Nockels
“Dead Man’s Rope” – Sting (I know.  No surprise here.)
“Hard to Say I’m Sorry” – Chicago (Don’t worry.  I have an entirely separate playlist dedicated to Peter Cetera.  ‘Cause I’m cool like that.)
“Show Me What You Got” – Jay-Z (The clean version.  ‘Cause it’s a regular request from John Henry)
“Lost Without U” – Robin Thicke (It gets me all warm and fuzzy inside.)
“Healer” – Hillsong
“Feelin’ Alright” – Joe Cocker
“Seasons of Love” – Rent (I’m not kidding.  I just recently fell in love it.)

Your turn to shake, shake, shake, shake uh shake it.  What’s on your playlist?

Olympic events that make me go hmmm.

As a kid, my favorite Olympic event was gymnastics.  ‘Cause, if you didn’t love Mary Lou Retton, you were no American.  No sir-ee Bob.

No doubt, swimming has captured us all this year thanks to the amazing abilities of one Michael Phelps.  He is some kind of super hero – or quite possibly some X-men mutant.  And, the feeling of watching that boy win his 8th gold medal.  Well, he was a swimmin’! (Think Forrest Gump.)

But, there are Olympic events that baffle me.  Here are a few.

1.  Synchronized diving.  So you can dive.  Why do you have to do it at the same time as someone else?

2.  Trampoline.  Really?  Who can’t do a flip on a trampoline?

3.  Badminton.  Had I known this sport would make it into the Olympics, I would have honed my skillz more in middle school P.E.

4.  Weightlifting.  Watching a barbell go from the ground to above someone’s head just doesn’t entertain me.

Any events make you go hmmm?

What has been your favorite Olympic moment?

Or, are you a non-watcher?

If He can send frogs from heaven, He can certainly sweep up spiders.

I’m not a fan of the spider.  I mean, in general, spiders do not bother me.  But those deadly ones, well, they tend to make me brush my shoulders at the mere thought of them. Yes.They.Do.

My good friend cleans my house.  Yes, this makes her a really good friend.   She informed me that she killed two brown recluse spiders in my house the other day.  Loverly.

I immediately advised my knight in shining armor of our house being overcome by poisonous arachnids, knowing he would draw his sword and fight every single multi-legged creature to the bitter end.

“Call Orkin,” he suggested.

Oh, Kris, you steal my heart.  And, I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse, and my husband who sat upon him was called “Scared of Spiders. “

So, yesterday morning I found myself praying for protection over my children.  “Oh, Lord, do away with these spiders with your miraculous power!”  I’m not sure why exactly I started praying like one of those old time television evangelists.  It just seemed appropriate.  Before you know it, I’ll stop wearing make-up and my hair will be in a bun.

A spider-killer from Orkin came for a visit after I let the Holy Ghost loose in the house.  She (hear that Kris?  SHE?) did some sort of spider-killing treatment.  I’m hoping those crawlers are gone in the name of Jesus.

At times, I feel a bit silly praying for such things.  But, then I remember, what concerns me concerns Him.

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you.”  1 Peter 5:7

Lord knows, those arachnids worry me.

Anything worrying you?

Gas Prices & Cigarettes

This is not my story, but it should be.  ‘Cause it’s so ridiculously funny.  Falon, our friend and former nanny, is the owner of this story.  No, she is not a “former” nanny, because we let her go.  How insane would that have been?  And, she is not a “former” because Anna had licked her face that one last time.  Falon probably encouraged such unacceptably social behavior.  Falon found love, moved to Tulsa and subsequently ripped our little hearts out – leaving me with two children who think AC/DC sings the national anthem.

Before I chase any more rabbits about how good life used to be with our Falon, here is her story as told by Falon herself.

Wednesday morning, I made my daily stop at the Gas Station I call my own.  With gas prices sky high it is normal to hear at least one “gas price” comment.  Wednesday was no exception.  It was however one of the funniest I have heard.  There were two women in line in front of me talking about gas prices.  Here is how the conversation went:

Woman 1:  “Gas prices are &*$%(@ high!”

Woman 2:  “I know.  It just p$%*@ me off.”

Woman 1:  “They need to do something about it.  I don’t have any money for food and stuff!”

**another 30 to 45 seconds of gas price comments**

Cashier:   “What can I get you today?”

Woman 1:  “I need 8 dollars on pump 3, a carton of camel lights, and 10 scratch-offs.”

Everything is relative, eh?

Oh, Falon your stories are funny.  Just think how much funnier they would be if you headed back south.  Your 401K plan would include a lifetime membership to the Oklahoma City Zoo.  How about passes to the Science Museum for bonuses?  Life could be grand again.

And the winner is…

I know the anticipation of the first ever randomness give-away has been just flat out overwhelming.  I’m not all too familiar with those online pick it for you tech machines that the professional bloggers use.   So, we’re kicking it back old school with our hat drawing.

I had hoped that Kris would be home from his trip in time to video the drawing.  But, in order to post the results today, I had to recruit John Henry and Anna.  Never mind any child labor laws.

Then, YouTube decided to be a thorn in my side and kept giving me some sort of error message.  Um, hello YouTube!  I’ve uploaded to you a gazillion times.  The error is not coming from this side of the computer!  I made friends with Vimeo instead.

So, without any further ado, let’s draw.

Who would’ve thought?

Congratulations you!  Crazy Love is on its way J

Talk about taking the cake!

My friend, Jennifer Doss, takes the cake.  No, really.  She does!  Her business is cleverly called, “She Takes the Cake”, and boy does she ever.  So, if you are livin’ in the metro Atlanta area, and want some tasty treats, let me know.  I can hook you up.

Now, my other friend, Jennifer – this Jennifer – sent this link to me yesterday.  There is a blog totally dedicated to cakes gone bad….really bad.  It provided quite the entertainment for me yesterday.  I think you’ll find that it does the same for you.

Enjoy.  It’s worth the click.

Have you ever had a baking project go bad?

Touching them all.

This is 6 minutes but well worth the time….when you have it.
