Don’t drink the Kool-aid. Tee-hee.

Every once in a while, I do a little work.  Oh, settle down.   I don’t like get CRAZY with it or anything.  But, I do have a few responsibilities with my husband’s company.  And, sometimes, I do them
J

Yesterday morning, Anna was begging to make Kool-aid.  The whole “in a bit” response just wasn’t satisfactory.  So, while I was on the phone with an aircraft financing guy (see? I’m kind of vital to our business) I peek into the kitchen and see this:

anna-koolaid-wp

I tried my darndest not to laugh while discussing biz-ness.  She used a little medicine cup to pour the sugar in.  Cutest evah.

Seriously.  I am in love with this girl.  Head over heels in love with her.  I love her determination.  I love her mad dancing skills.  I love her.

Thank you, Jesus, for letting me be Anna Takle’s mommy.  You’re the best.

Go easy on the blueberries.

On Sunday, I made the ominous decision to eat healthier.  ‘Cause let’s face it.  These Valentine hearts and M&Ms aren’t going to jump off my hips all by themselves.  So, instead of digging through the candy jar in search of some sort of satisfaction that only sugar can bring, I chose to inhale an entire carton of blueberries.  Tart ones.  And, they were almost as satisfying as those Dove Chocolates I lifted from Anna’s Valentine sack she so carefully decorated.

Fast forward to Monday where I was forced to make myself comfortable in the ladies’ room with a few magazines and games on my iPhone.  Needless to say, Kris won’t have to tell me again to leave a few blueberries for the rest of the family.

Moving on.

I am blessed.

I go to a super awesome bible study with some super awesome gals.  {Read as though you are back in Junior High.}  Yesterday, we talked about what it means to be blessed.  Well, “blessed” comes from the Greek word “makarios” which means “more than happy.”  We all did that thing where you go around the room and share what “blessed” means to you.  To me, it means that I have a peace in good times and in bad.  Every situation that comes your way is not going to be a situation where you shout, “Wow, that was blessing, wasn’t’ it?”  But, when you have the peace of God despite your circumstances, then you can keep on keepin’ on.  Read me?  That’s a blessing.

For example, I can have a really crappy day that may look something like this:

– Wake up, feel yuck about myself, and don’t feel good in anything I put on.

– Fashion wars with a 4 year old.  Emotional breakdown with a 6 year old.  Need I say more?

– Have a stupid argument with my husband.

– Money becomes even tighter.

Perhaps you can relate to one or all of the above.  It’s the little, sometimes big, things than can make for a crappy day.

BUT then, I remember.

– I have a body that is whole.  And, the last colonoscopy I had showed no signs of ulcerative colitis.  I am blessed to live in this body.

– I have two very unique children.  One makes my life so much dang fun.  I laugh often because of her.  The other is tender and gentle towards others.  His compassion inspires me to love people even more.

– I am married to a warrior who fights hard for this family.  He puts us first, and I am so emphatically in love with him.

– God has never forsaken me.  He is my Jehovah Jirah.

You see?  I am blessed.  Even when things aren’t perfect.  I am more than happy.  Because, I have this peace of God that reminds me no matter what, everything is gonna be all right.

Oh, and the blueberry story?  Well, that was just a little free advice.  No need to thank me.

What does being blessed mean to you?

Give ’em some praise.

While taking John Henry to school yesterday, I told him, “Thank you.”

“For what?” He asked.

“For being John Henry Landreth.  I wouldn’t want you to be anyone else but you.”

His blue eyes lit up and a smile raced from ear to ear.  “You’re welcome, Mom.”

I so want my children to know that they are wonderful JUST AS THEY ARE.  That they are fearfully and wonderfully made.

God makes no mistakes.

He knew us long before we were ever conceived.

I usually don’t give you assignments.  But let me encourage you to tell your children today that you are so glad that they are who they are.  Who God created them to be.

 I bet they smile.

Oh, and I can’t even believe I’m going to say this….

But.

Favorites Party Tuesday!

favorites-party

Every Tuesday ‘til Christmas, I’ll be joining my gal pal, Kim, in her 2008 End of the Year FAVORITES Party.  She assigns the FAVORITE topic each Tuesday.  It is her party, after all.  Join the fun.  And, hop over to Kim and give her a shout.  You will Lu-HUV that girl.  I love her for many reasons.  But, mostly because she laughs at me.  And, I like that in a person.

Today’s FAVORITE assignment is Thanksgiving.  Huh.  Good call, Kim!

Most of my Thanksgivings have been spent in Georgia.  I’ve spent two of my 33 Turkey Days in Oklahoma and will spend my third one here this Thursday.  One tradition that I maintain no matter if I am southeast or smack dab in the middle of America is my grandmother’s dressing.  As soon as I learned to drive {or never learned according to a few}, I began driving to Callie Mae’s house to help her make the dressing – or manna from heaven.  I have acquired her mad dressing makin’ skills.  Oh, yes I have.

Side note:  Callie Mae is my Grandmother who is also Big Mama to many.

This Thanksgiving Day will not go without Callie Mae’s dressing.  I thought I’d share her recipe with you.  It’s Southern.  It’s mad.  It’s go-o-od.

Callie Mae’s Dressing
You need:

cornmeal
8 eggs
salt & pepper
1 can cream of chicken
oil
buttermilk
1 stick of butter (melted)
3 or 4 onions (chopped)
12 saltines (crumbled)
5 pieces of loaf bread
small chicken (cooked)
broth from chicken
turkey juice

Directions:
Make 1 large pan of cornbread.  Mix 3 handfuls {gotta love Big Mama] of cornmeal, 1 egg, salt & pepper, and 2 spoons of oil.  {Teaspoon? Tablespoon? Nope. Just a regular old spoon.}  Add buttermilk and equal parts of water.  Add just enough to “make juicy,” Callie Mae says.  Pour mixture into large iron skillet. Make sure you cover skillet with 3 SPOONS of vegetable oil.  Cook on 450° until brown.

Cut cornbread up into large bowl.  Take juice from turkey and mix with cornbread.  Add cream of chicken, butter, onions, saltines, bread, broth, chicken, salt & pepper.  Whew.  I’m tired already.  Oh, and let that broth cool before pouring or Callie Mae will go pick a hickory stick.  Add remaining eggs, and “make it juicy!”

Mix it all together and throw it into a large, deep glass bowl.  Begin baking at 350°.  When you start to see some bubblin’ on top, turn up the temp a little at a time until it hits 450°.  Cook approximately 1 hour until done.

Hmmm.  I hope I didn’t leave anything out.  Oh well.

Voila!  It’s not for the faint of heart.  But, I cannot imagine a Thanksgiving meal without it.

Now, Kim said we could share a favorite Thanksgiving memory, tradition, game, or food.  And, I chose tradition.  When I told Kris I thought about sharing how Bryan, husband #1…..Wait.  Not insinuating that Bryan was like #1 as in Woo-Hoo, you win the prize.  Just that he was my first husband.  Well, ex-husband.  Follow?  Back to my story.  I thought about sharing how Bryan proposed to me on Thanksgiving Day and how sweet it was.  Kris was all like, “Why don’t we stick to the past 5 years.”  And, I was all like, “Okay, but it was such a sweet memory.”  And, I just dug deeper and deeper.  So here ya go.  Callie Mae’s Dressing.

What’s one of your favorite Thanksgiving memories, traditions, games or foods?

I get letters.

In my inbox.  Who uses snail mail anymore?

My very good friend, Kate, e-mailed me last Friday about her sweet time she had with Jesus that morning.  Something she said really got to me.

“No matter how much I have in my life that I don’t want, I HAVE SO MUCH in my life THAT I DO WANT!  There are blessings all around me that I can overlook by searching for a certain blessing.”

How often I have those little aha moments (thanks, Oprah).  And, how often I let my search for other things (or my discontentment with present things) rob me of the blessings that are staring me square in the face.

I tried to impart this message to my children Friday night. They sat at their cute little table eating their hotdogs, chips and grapes – an obvious dinner of champions.  I didn’t nuke these wieners in the microwave.  Nosireebob.  They were grilled, baby.  One would think that they would have appreciated the pig on their plate, but all they could say was “Mom, you forgot our drinks!”

Such Friday night kitchen efforts, ahem, meant nothing to my precious gifts from God.  I forgot to serve them an ice cold beverage.

It’s hard to expect my little ones to grasp this kind of gratitude when I so easily forget my own blessings.  But, I’m learning.

By the way, here are Kate and I circa 1989.

What?  You didn’t accent turquoise turtlenecks with purple cardigans?  We didn’t even have to try to look that cool.  It just came naturally.  With the help of hot rollers, of course.  I don’t think I’ve said the word hot roller since 1990.  Blessed be His name.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.  1 Thessalonians 5:18

Let today be a day that we are thankful for we DO have.  Amen, Sister Kate?

These small hours.

I have these moments.   Still moments that I honestly hang onto with serious vigor.  You know those moments that you and your spouse look at each other and laugh.  When your child looks in wonderment at her own shadow.  When your son discovers that he can finally snap his fingers.  When you are all together doing nothing but still soaking up the minutes like a sponge.

I had one of these moments last night watching Kris wrestle with the kids.  Listening to Anna tell her daddy that she is “throwing one-hundred different kinds of smoke.”  Laughing at John Henry as he removed his shirt, flexed his muscles, and growled like the Hulk.

I have these moments.

Where I really, truly appreciate that moment.  Right there.

I love those moments.

The Rob Thomas tune, “Little Wonders” from Meet the Robinsons always makes me reflect on those moments.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and remember that our lives are made in these small hours.

I cannot forget the way I feel right now.

I hope you have a few small hours this weekend.

Content with a rock.

You know those people who are just plain difficult to buy gifts for?  I’m married to one of them.  It’s not because he’s fastidious or difficult to please.  It’s just that he is always content with what he has.  I’ll address the issue of contentment momentarily.

So, after racking my brain on the perfect Father’s Day gift for my easily satisfied husband, I had an epiphany.  Well, not really an epiphany – but a grand idea, nonetheless.  I acquired this photo of my super sexy husband landing in Las Vegas:

and, had it framed, at Hobby Lobby no less.  I must say, that I was pleasantly surprised at how efficient and economical Hobby Lobby was on framing the photograph.  I didn’t break the bank, so everyone was happy.

You may be wondering, who in the heck took this incredibly amazing photo of my super sexy husband touching down in sin city?  If you visit www.airliners.net, you’ll see a whole host of photographs that some aviation photographer junkies post.  And, we found this one.  It’s entirely cool.

Now, just when I thought I had the most impressive of gifts, John Henry shows up with this gift for Kris:

How did John Henry know that Kris would love a rock with hair?  It’s like he completely read his mind.

Of course, we all treasure the little gifts our children make us.  But Kris couldn’t have been more pleased with this piece of earth accessorized by colorful threads.  It’s the kind of stuff he digs.

I think we all too often become consumed with stuff.  We don’t have enough.  We have too much.  We constantly want more.  Sometimes, it’s nice to just sit back and be happy with what I already have – both materially and otherwise.  Why do some of us struggle with a soft word like contentment?  Even when God has blessed us with more than we need?  I will not argue that I like nice things nor do I see wrong in having them – and having much.  But I think there is truth in that money and possessions can complicate life at times.  Not only do I live in a home, I live in a nice home.  The United Nations reported that there are 100 million people in the world who are homeless.  I drive a dependable car.  I never miss a meal.  How can I not be content?

My prayer for today is that I learn to always be content with what God has already given me.  That I don’t trust in my stuff, but in the One who provides it.  I want to be able say as in Philippians 4:11, Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned to be content with whatever I have.

What helps you when you are struggling with contentment?

Women who have influenced me. (4 of 5)

Kitty Grubbs

My relationship with Kitty began when I was only ten years old.  For the years that followed, I was connected to her as a piano student, a caregiver to her precious children (who are all grown up now), and through praise and worship.  Throughout these connections, we became friends.

Kitty imparted to me one of the greatest gifts I think exists in the world:  the gift of giving.  I can remember her buying me Easter dresses and my first prom dress just because she wanted to bless me.  Her giving continued throughout my adolescent years.  It wasn’t just the dresses or the piano lessons that she gave, but it was the heart and significance behind it.  And, she gave with no expectation.

She doesn’t give because her life has been without heartaches and broken roads.  She has endured more than most.  She gives because she chooses to live no other way.  Kitty understands and lives out that she is “His hands and His feet.”  She takes the call to be like Jesus seriously.  Like we all should.

I could say so much more about Kitty besides her generosity.  Like the fact that she loves and cares for people deeply.  That she seeks Christ for direction and listens….really listens to His voice.  That her dedication to the house of God has been steadfast.   And, how she always put her children first and took the role as a mother as her greatest call.

Just as Kitty has blessed me, I hope I always bless others.  She gave, and she continues to give.  May we all receive the gift of giving and be more like Him.

But just as you excel in everything…see that you also excel in this grace of giving.  2 Corinthians 8:7

I know this man.

I know this man who loves deeply.  He is selfless.  He loves his family like no other.  He is patient when he takes his daughter fishing and she pees while sitting on the bank.  He will interrupt a busy day to take his son flying in a little red Cessna.  When his wife shares her fears and stresses of life, he responds with a heartfelt, “What can I do?”  He travels to make provision possible, but when he is home, he is all there.

That merits repeating….he is ALL there.

He is funny.  I mean really funny.  His heart is golden.

He is a loyal friend.  He is an even better daddy.  As a husband, he beats all.

I’m on my annual girls trip, and my thoughts are on him.  But, my thoughts are on him every day.  Sappy, I know.  I like sappy sometimes.   Casey, would you please play “I Know What Love Is” by Celine Dion?

My dear friend, Jenny, sang this in our wedding.  These words ring more true today than they did August 16, 2003:

I will fall
And you will catch me always
Time has taught me this
I will fly
And you’ll be there to guide me
Straight up to my heart’s highest wish
I feel you close to me
And I know what love is

I know this man.  I’m so blessed that I do.
