He’s so high, high above me.

John Henry came home from school last week and told me, “people who don’t love God don’t know Him.”  I’m pretty sure 1 John 4:8 is one of his memory verses.   I thought it would be fun to interview my children on what they know about God.  Here are their answers. The spelling and punctuation are courtesy of mom.  Grammar and content are courtesy of a 6 year old and 4 year old.

John Henry

That He is our Father.

He sent His son Jesus to earth.

And, He made us. He made Brew, all these animals.  The seventh day He rest.

I pray to talk to Him. We pray to Him anytime we want to.

We praise Him, and we celebrate His birthday.

Whenever you look up, you’re looking at Him.

He died on a cross to save our sins, and He loves us.

Anna

When God doesn’t know us or someone doesn’t know God, we have to pray to God so He’ll talk to us.

God praise us to bless our hearts to breathe.

God is in our hearts so He can hear us, ‘cause He’s so high when we pray.

He lives in heaven ‘cause heaven’s His favorite place to live.

He does lots of good stuff.

And, if we be bad we tell the truth.

And, He makes us by eating food to grow.  If we don’t have food in our tummy, we die and go to heaven.

God bless us with rats to hold and cats to hold.  Rats are like mouse.  Rats are tiny, and they scratch.

And, there ya go.

What do you know about God?

Extreme President Make-Over

I’m coming down from a sugar high from the massive amounts of Valentine treats collected by my children.  So, y’all bear with me.  I’m going to pretend the Christmas holidays are just now ending and make a resolution to eat healthier; forsaking all sugars until pounds I do part.  Selah and Amen.

It’s President’s Day.

What better way to honor our presidents than these completely respectable, life-like crafts?

presidents-day-wp2

I had to take a second look at George Washington there.  It’s hard to distinguish if it’s Washington I’m seeing or my great-aunt Kate with rollers in her hair.  In any case, I cannot tell a lie.  I love those kids.  I love this country.

Abraham Lincoln said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count.  It’s the life in your years.”  While you or I may never be president of the United States, we can choose to live a life that is beyond ourselves.  A life that is rich in service.  A life that is rich in love.  I would hate to know that I lived my life only concerned for my own needs and wants.

I pray the same prayer over my children every night.  In part of that prayer, I ask God that they “may always be a blessing to people.”  Because, I know that in living a life that is life-giving, that there will be life in their years.

This post is brought to you by the letter V.

Anna’s pre-school teachers backed me into a corner the other day interrogating me on what kind of language we are using in the Takle house.

They didn’t really.  But, I bet they wondered after Anna’s little illustration.

Anna and her schoolmates are learning the letter “V”.  Who can think of a word that begins with the letter “V”?  Apparently, Anna can.

“I know!  I know a word that starts with V!”  She claimed.

Of course, her teachers obliged.

“VUCK!  VUCK STARTS WITH V!”

Nice.

Her teachers assured me they did, indeed, hear the “V” sound.  I suppose as long as she doesn’t say “What the” in front of it, we’ll be okay.

He sent frequent text messages.

My boy donned a tuxedo.

And, Anna….well…..

Let’s just say Kris didn’t win the fashion wars.  I was sure of it when I returned home to see her wearing this.

A lovely tank top in the heart of winter.

I sure did miss that girl.  Kris decided to document their chain of events by sending me regular text messages.  Here was the first incoming message:

“I am about to fall over with laughter listening to Anna talk her shew-wee out.”

Um, how do you spell “shew-wee” anyway?

He took her to Redrock Canyon Grill for their first date night, a local favorite for watching sunset while you dine.  Kris messaged, “She has quite the appetite….and the cow bell just went off for sunset, and she wants to go ring it now.”   He continued, “I think I have {the cow bell ringing} under control now.”

When he sent this one:

“I miss you guys, but we are having a blast.  This is precious for Anna and me.”

I knew sweet memories were being made.

In the meantime, John Henry and I had our own fun celebrating the wedding of a very close family friend – my God sister, Sandyn who married Captain Elic Colwell who is the brother of Lindsey Takle who is the wife of Dr. Leiv Takle, Jr. who is the brother of Kris Takle who is the husband of me.  Yes, six degrees….

And some pics just for funsies.

I could’ve taken that little guy home with me.  For real.

Oh, and me with my completely beautiful mama.

That’s it.  We’re all tired.  And I’m happy to be back with my husband and fashion trailblazer.

How was your weekend?

Wonder who will have the most eventful weekend?

I’m leavin’ on a jet plane.  I don’t know when I’ll be back again.  I really do know when I’ll be back.  Sunday.  Today, the little guy and I are headed south for one big wedding celebration.  John Henry will be bearing some rings, and I’ll be…Well, I’ll be waving and smiling at him as he walks down that aisle with those baby blues wearing a tux.  I really don’t have much of any consequence to write about today, not that this is any different from any other day.  But, thank you for indulging me still.

Kris will be holding down the fort here in the great state of Oklahoma.  With Anna Takle.

With Anna Takle.

Oh, what fun they are going to have.  He has promised to take her out on a date to some fancy schmancy restaurant where she can wear a dress and all the trimmings.  Why he seems to think he is going to win the fashion wars is nothing short of amusing, but he appears to be up for the challenge.   This fancy schmancy restaurant is Mahogany Prime Steakhouse – our date night of choice.  Anna, however, said that she prefers Mexican cuisine.  The girl loves chips and queso.  Can’t imagine where she gets that from, but it’s a trait I certainly admire.

I did offer to go ahead and make Anna’s lunch for pre-K on Friday, but Kris says he’s got it.  What he doesn’t realize is that he’s going to find himself pressed for time on Friday morning after spending most of it in Anna’s closet bribing her.  His choice.  Have fun, babe.  I do love you.  And, please take notes.

Okay, that’s all I got.  For real.

The Bachelor got me thinkin’.

I haven’t been watching this season’s The Bachelor.  I really haven’t watched it in a lot of seasons.   But, I thought it necessary to tune in last night since it was sure to be the most dramatic rose ceremony ever.

I heard the poor guy call his son his “favorite person.”  I always tell Anna she is my favorite girl.  Kris seems to think I should refrain from calling her this due to the ‘what if’ factor.

‘What if’ factor?

What if we have another little girl?

Don’t go tellin’ tales out of school now.  I’m not “P.”  That’s what Bigmama calls it since saying *GASP* “pregnant” is not very polite of a Southern girl.

We’re kind of at that stage in life where I’m not getting any younger and Anna’s not getting any easier.  At least, not in the fashion department.  I could easily identify her lack of progress when she picked out these new skids.

annas-sneakers

But, hey.  They’re shiny.  They sparkle.  They’ve got pizzazz.  And, what else really matters to a four-year old girl?  For real.

I’m really not sure what decision we’re going to make.  Although, it could make for some good blog material.  Hmm.  So, ya got knocked up for blog material.

It sounds like Jason, um, the Bachelor, is open to more kids.  Bless his heart.  First, he has to make the most emotional decision of his life.  Ever.

I’m here to help. In case You need it.

Me:  John Henry, take that ball out of the living room.  If you hit the television, you will be in some serious trouble.

Anna:  And, get a spankin’.

Me:  You’re not the parent, Anna.

Anna:  I was just sayin’ it for you!

Me:  I don’t need any help, thank you.

I wonder how often we think God needs our help with things.  Ya know.  Just in case He forgets what His Word says or something like that.

I’m not saying we don’t pray.  We need that.  He digs that.  I’m just saying that some things really aren’t about us.  Some things should just go into the God box instead of the Me Box.  And, most things are beyond our control anyway.

And, that’s okay.

He’s God.

I’m not.

I don’t even play the role of the Holy Spirit well.  Believe me, I’ve tried.

Let Him do His thing.  He’s pur-tee good at it.

Be still and know that I am God.  Psalm 46:10

My day in pictures…almost.

Well, Chuck, the day started with a beautiful white blanket on the ground and the stunning sun in the sky….something I had missed for the past few days.

I knew this day would be great.  School or no school.  We all got dressed.  I put on make-up.  Elements my face had not seen the day before.  Anna requested I “twist” her hair.  I finally figured out she meant braids.  She wanted four braids.  I talked her into two.  The true miracle of the day.

She hates the camera.

We ventured to the mall where I spent my usual dollar on this excuse for a carousel that my children never seem to tire of.

snow-day-2-carousel-wp

Okay, so far so good.

We ate a late lunch in the mall food court.  By late, I mean 2:00 when I realized I had not fed my children.  They didn’t seem to hold it against me.

snow-day-2-food-court-wp

Again, she HATES the camera.  Hardly notices it at all.

Hotel For Dogs began at 2:30, so I knew we needed to post haste.

So, we headed to the theater, purchased our tickets and loaded up on our treats, which you practically have to take out a small loan for.

And, then it happened.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I have no picture of this next climatic moment, so do your best to imagine the scene.

John Henry has his popcorn and Icee in his capable, growing hands.  I have my Junior Mints in my purse and Anna’s popcorn and Icee in my hands.

“Mooommm!  I want to carry my OWN popcorn and Icee!”  Anna pleaded.  Pa-lee-ded.

“Anna, you aren’t old enough to carry your own.  You have to six years old,” I explained.

“But MOOOOMMMM!!!!”  She let out one final whimper then tugged on my arm and somehow intertwined her leg between both of mine.

KER-PLOP!

Down I went.  The least graceful face plant you’ve ever seen.  Then, Anna followed suit.

The greatest victims were the popcorn and Icee, of course.

Brilliant.

Let’s just skip past all of the on-lookers who felt sorry for the poor little mother managing her children on a snow day.  The kind movie food people (feel free to use that one) replaced my shattered items at no charge.

Of course, there was no replacing my dignity.

At least, the kids continued to enjoy their day at the movies.

snow-day-2-theater-wp1

As for me, well, I had to keep my left hand wrapped tightly around my cold water bottle to lessen the pain of the carpet burn I acquired in the trauma.

After the movie, we enjoyed what was left of our white blanket.

snow-day-2-snow-wp

So did this guy.

snow-day-2-brew-wp

Later, I self-medicated with a glass of wine and read this text from my husband:

“Oh no.  You know I am falling down laughing right now.”

I had that one coming to me.  I assure you.

School is back in session today.  While there were a few rough patches in the past 72 hours, there were certainly a plethora of memories of made.

And, those are the things that life is made of.

“Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow, what a ride!'”  – Unknown

The initial thought of a snow day sounds nice.

Then, you have one.  And, you pray and pray that school is open the next day.  That’s today.  It’s not.  For the love.

I did my best to keep the little people entertained yesterday.  I even let them make edible playdough.

anna-playdough-wp1jh-pladough-wp1

That would be blue food coloring that when mixed with tan colored dough looks like something that just came out of Shrek’s nose.  Sorry.  It’s true.

And, yes.  I did taste it.  Once.

Of course, after hearing all morning how they just had to play outside, I gave in, despite the arctic-like temperature.  At least, arctic where I come from.

snow-day-wp2

It was co-oh-old.  So, I wished them well and headed back in like a good mother.  John Henry wasn’t too far behind me.  “It is fa-fa-freezing out there,” he commented as he came back inside.

“Johnry!!!”  That would be the littlest Takle still outside crying, because her brother was done with the cold.  She’s a brave one.  Much to her chagrin, she came back inside.

snow-day-anna-wp1

And, ate the sleet off of her jeans.

snow-day-anna-2-wp

At this point, I had to make a decision if it was more dangerous braving the icy road conditions or staying cooped up at home with two little people.

So, we loaded up….  Okay, Kris came home, and we went to CVS.  ‘Cause that’s how we roll.

Kris promised the kids he would take them back outside, because he knew mom was D-O-N-E.  They made snow, pardon, sleet angels.

snow-day-jh-angels-wpsnow-day-anna-angels-wp

Yes, Anna’s pants are on backwards.  And, so were her underwear, but that’s another story.  “I like them backwards!”  She claims.

Today, we are getting out and going to the movies.  I don’t care how much those Jr. Mints will cost.   Must.Get.Out.

The sweet little fire and hot chocolate just aren’t cutting it any more.  I’m entering my own personal state of emergency that only the Goose can cure.

You know I kid.  Sort of.

What do you do when you are cooped up in the house?

Only Aretha could still get R-E-S-P-E-C-T wearing that hat.

I know you’re all probably inaugurated out.  Between Aretha singing with that big bow on her head and hearing the word “historic” a record-breaking number of times, I’m sure you’re ready to just get on with this season’s American Idol and The Office.

But, my son reminded me of one of our greatest civic duties yesterday.

John Henry watched a portion of President Barack Obama’s inauguration at school.

“I saw President George Bush and his wife.”  He said.  (I just think it’s the cutest thing ever that he says “his wife.”  I know, I know.  It’s a momma thing.)

“President Obama is going to the White House,” he explained.

“Yes, he is.  What do you think about that?”  I asked him.

“I’m going to pray for him,” he responded.

I think I am, too.

For me, that was my favorite moment yesterday.

“So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled.”  – President Barack Obama

Do you have a favorite moment from yesterday’s big event?
