Holiday Travel.

I love traveling with children.  Love it.  Love it like I love somebody eating my last Junior Mint or breaking my favorite MAC eye shadow.  Our holiday travel to Georgia was A.WALK.IN.THE.PARK. compared to our summer road trip.  Memba that?  Oh, blessed be the name.  I am aware.  I AM AWARE.  That I am a wee bit spoiled with private travel.  So, you need not throw stones in the commentin’ area.  Mkay?  But, still.  My children obviously do not understand how significant the lives of Edward and Bella are with their relentless inquisition and chatter.  Um, can’t you see I’m reading?  {Still raptured with that dang Twilight Saga.  Sorry.}

Then upon descent, Anna initiates a loud, “DAD!  DAD!  DAD!  DAD!  DAD!”  So much for the FAA requested sterile cockpit.

Anyhoo, we made it to our beloved G-Town.  And, nothing says holiday cheer quite like watching the movie “Elf” with my dad.

Here is my favorite clip from the movie.

Luh-huv it.

Are you traveling for the holidays?  Are you using duct tape to endure the travel?  I kid.  You know I do.  Ahem.

Anybody up for slaughterin’ a pig or something?

I consider myself a Southern girl but certainly not country.  Yet, when I replay conversations in my mind, I realize just how wrong I am.

A recent conversation with The Ex:

Me:  Are you ready for Christmas?”

The Ex:  “Yes.  I’ve purchased John Henry’s gift, and I even bought myself a shotgun.”

Me:  “Wow.”

{And, then I said it.}

Me:  “You oughta come down to the farm sometime and shoot.”

I know.  Right?  That’s just embarrassing y’all.

Do you ever surprise yourself with the things you say?

Favorites Tuesday – Week Four

favorites-party7

Celebrating Favorites Tuesday again with Kim over at Deliberate Hope!  Today’s FAVORITE is a favorite Christmas tradition.

I really don’t have a “favorite.”  I tend to enjoy all of the festivities, foods, and fun that the season brings.  But, I thought I’d share a Scandinavian tradition that I inherited when I married the K.T. man.

What you see here is a sorry excuse for a Christmas tree that I purchased at my beloved Target last year.  Once again, I opted not to go all out with all that decoratin’ since the family would be heading south for the holidays.  What you also see by this here tree is a Yule Goat.  I know it resembles a straw, under-fed Terrier, but it’s not.  Mkay?  It’s a goat.

swedish-goat-wp

Now, I’ve been told by my blonde, Scandinavian family members that the Yule Goat watches over the gifts under the tree.  I learned a whole lot more when I visited Wikipedia.  I recommend you do your research there on the history of the goat instead of me leading you astray on this very random blog.

Kris grew up with the Yule Goat always by the tree.  We carry on that tradition.  Sort of.  Maybe not this year with my lack of festiveness in the house.  But, I have managed to convince my children that our neighbor’s outdoor lights are ours, too.  I just wished they’d stop asking me to turn our lights on before they figure out the Takle yard is bare.

I know I can’t pull this off much longer.

What’s your favorite Christmas tradition?

Upsets, Victories & Campfires.

Friday evening I went out ALONE, Praise Him, to acquire emergency food items such as milk and Sour Patch Kids.  When I returned home, this is what I found.

jh-anna-campfire-wp

Kris built them this “campfire” and served them up some hot chocolate – which was basically cold milk with Hersey’s Syrup poured in.  I later joined the fun and added a few marshmallows to roast.  “Gross,” sums up John Henry’s response to the toasted treats.  Oh well.  More for Anna and me.

Kris flew to the Big 12 Championship on Saturday.  “It’s work,” He always defends.  Bless his heart.  I did a little Christmas shopping and somehow ended up spending more money on those stupid sausages and cheeses at a mall kiosk.  They get me every year.  The holiday shopping completely took my mind off of Anna’s decision to wear four shirts that day, causing her to resemble an Alabama line backer.

I soon learned of the Crimson Tide’s upset.  {Sorry, Mikey Bo Bo.}  Then, I geared up to watch my own team.  The Oklahoma Sooners.  Yes.  That’s right.  They’ve kind of grown on me this year.  I figure if you can’t beat ‘em.  Well, you know.

Kris came back home Sunday evening.  But, not before I nearly lost my sanity with two children who apparently care more about their own exploits than my peace of mind.  After Anna knocked over a huge bin of dog food, I knew it was time to get out of the house.  Then, I remembered it’s against the law to leave two young kids at home by themselves, so I went back and got them.

I jest.  I would never do such a thing on the Lord’s day.

We all headed to the nearest Sonic and self-medicated with Sonic Blasts and Cream Slushes.

Later in the evening John Henry informed me that Noah was powerful like God.  A bible story that we apparently need to work on.  And, Anna told me that God was more powerful than Santa.  Perhaps, she should start telling God what she wants for Christmas.  Because, only He can afford her wish list which is pretty much every single commercial you see on the tube.

That’s it.  That’s my weekend.  How was yours?

KFD Designs

kristen-logo-wp

‘Tis the season to promote my friends.  Let me introduce you to Kristen F. Davis.

kristen-wp

Kristen is an artist, blogger, jewelry designer, and expert in turning walls into pieces of art.  She has the spectacular gift of rescuing furniture, lamps, you name it, and making them chic and enviable.  She’s not even afraid to try her hand at rewiring an old lamp!  She’s either brave or just plain crazy.  I’ll choose the former.  Below are some of my favorite photos of her brilliance.

kristen-wp-2

Kristen took an old shelf and painted it the same color as her wall to display her white dishes and “trinkets.”  This is one of my favorites.  Read more on open shelving here.

The girl’s not afraid of color.  You can see the before and afters here.  Isn’t that turquoise great?

She paints floors.

And walls.  The black you see hanging from the tree is chalkboard paint.  How cute is that?

She makes jewelry.

Kristen’s jewelry is terrific and fun.  I recently purchased a fabulous hand-made necklace and the earrings above from her Etsy store.  The jewelry is reasonably priced and ONE.OF.A.KIND.  Love, love, love it.  Check out her current inventory here.  They make great one-of-a-kind gifts!

Kristen offers style tips and before and afters on her blog.  Check her out!  Also, her new site, www.kfddesigns.com will be launching soon.  When it does, I’ll put it under my “Links I Like.”

If you live in the Atanta-ish area and are looking for creative wall, floor, or fireplace painting, she is your gal.

Unfortunately for me, I can’t make things or paint well.  But give me a box of legos and the results are endless.

Are you artsy, creative like?

Favorites Party – Week Two

favorites-party1

It’s FAVORITES time again.  What a way to get in the holiday spirit.  Since I’m not decorating my house due to impending holiday travel, I’ll ‘tis the season right here in bloggy world.

Today’s FAVORITE topic is FAVORITE gift.  A favorite gift you’ve given or received.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I love to give.  But, I sure do get silly excited when I’m the recipient of presents.  Except for that puffy Christmas vest one of my students gave me years ago.

My favorite gift.  I had a hard time narrowing it down between Dolly Pops, Brooke Shields  Barbie Doll, Snoopy Snow Cone Machine {carpal tunnel hell}, and the Barbie Townhouse.  But in the end, the Barbie Townhouse beat all.

barbie-townhouse1

Do you know how awesome that yellow elevator was?  You pulled a string to raise it up and down.  It was seven year old HEAVEN for this little girl.  I loved it.  Thank you mom and dad for making my Christmases so grand.  They were perfect.  Even without the beloved Cabbage Patch Doll J

I’ve actually looked at buying one of these vintage Barbie items on eBay for Anna.  I did manage to acquire a Brooke Shields Barbie Doll for her still in the box on eBay for 99 cents.  I really didn’t get the reaction from Anna that I was looking for on that one.  Can’t imagine why.  Brooke is way cooler than Hannah Montana.

What is a favorite gift you have given or received?

Death On Two Wheels!

Hope your holiday was just loverly.  Ours was nothing short of pure delight.  I opted out of Black Friday shopping.  No deal is so good that it’s worth causing me to self-medicate with yet another serving of Sweet Potato Soufflé.  I had an even better treat Friday evening when Atlanta’s own Death On Two Wheels stopped in Oklahoma City on their long drive back to the South from California where they had just performed and recorded.

death-tour-wp

Band member and good friend, David Fountain, had texted me to let me know they were coming through.   A few hours later I was sitting at Redrock Canyon Grill enjoying Southwest cuisine and conversation with the five fabulous guys who make up Death On Two Wheels.

I have known two of Death’s band members since they entered the world.  When this cutie was two, he would steal my heart and another cookie by simply saying “I wuh oo Duh-tee.”

death-3-wp1

Wow, Dusty.  This must make you feel so very old.  No.  I only feel old when I eat myself into a sick oblivion on Thanksgiving causing me to reach for the Zantac.

Here are more pics of Death and me.  Ha.  “I’m with the band.”  I’ve always wanted to say that.  And, forgive the photo quality.  That would be David’s not so flashy flash on his nifty Blackberry.

death-2-wp

Above on the left is Andy, the band’s drummer.  Middle is Paul Doss, guitarist and friend {and son of Jennifer – my friend who sends hand-written note cards.}

death-wp-11

The one with the hat is Trae Vedder, lead vocal and guitarist.  Then, you have David, bassist, and Wes, keyboardist.

Before the fellas left in their van, they gave us a few CDs and t-shirts.  So, I listened to their new album just released last month.

death-album-wp5

I’m not even going to pretend that I am qualified to write an album review.  But, I must admit that I really liked their unique sound that gives respect to classic rock and roll.  My personal favorite is Sweet Love.  It is sweet, indeed.  And, Two Dollar Bills is a download must.  It has a little Cross Canadian Ragweed flair to it.  Of course, downloading just one or two songs only gives you a part of Death’s story.  Much like a good book, you have to download the entire album to get the whole narrative.

Check out Death On Two Wheels here and download their new album on iTunes.  You won’t be disappointed.  Happy listening!

ONE Album.

You can only listen to ONE album for the rest of your life.  Only ONE.  Which album do you choose?

My pick is Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales.

 sting-album

The title is a play on Sting’s given name, Gordon Sumner and a character, “the summoner”, from Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales.  Aside from this album being beautifully poetic, Sting’s voice relaxes me like no other.

I’ve seen Sting in concert numerous times.  Even caught The Police Reunion Tour.  And, while I appreciate his early work with The Police, nothing compares to his career as a solo artist.  NOTHING.  I finally met this perfect Englishman almost five years ago.  He wore this scarf wrapped cleverly around his neck and…  Oh, I could go on and on.  He made this cute little reference about my name and Dusty Springfield.  How beautiful that day was.

If I could only download one song from this album {oh, the humanity}, then it would be “Shape of My Heart.”

Your turn.

ONE album.  No more.

And, this is completely Thanksgiving related, because I am ever so thankful that Gordon Sumner was born on October 2, 1951.

Favorites Party Tuesday!

favorites-party

Every Tuesday ‘til Christmas, I’ll be joining my gal pal, Kim, in her 2008 End of the Year FAVORITES Party.  She assigns the FAVORITE topic each Tuesday.  It is her party, after all.  Join the fun.  And, hop over to Kim and give her a shout.  You will Lu-HUV that girl.  I love her for many reasons.  But, mostly because she laughs at me.  And, I like that in a person.

Today’s FAVORITE assignment is Thanksgiving.  Huh.  Good call, Kim!

Most of my Thanksgivings have been spent in Georgia.  I’ve spent two of my 33 Turkey Days in Oklahoma and will spend my third one here this Thursday.  One tradition that I maintain no matter if I am southeast or smack dab in the middle of America is my grandmother’s dressing.  As soon as I learned to drive {or never learned according to a few}, I began driving to Callie Mae’s house to help her make the dressing – or manna from heaven.  I have acquired her mad dressing makin’ skills.  Oh, yes I have.

Side note:  Callie Mae is my Grandmother who is also Big Mama to many.

This Thanksgiving Day will not go without Callie Mae’s dressing.  I thought I’d share her recipe with you.  It’s Southern.  It’s mad.  It’s go-o-od.

Callie Mae’s Dressing
You need:

cornmeal
8 eggs
salt & pepper
1 can cream of chicken
oil
buttermilk
1 stick of butter (melted)
3 or 4 onions (chopped)
12 saltines (crumbled)
5 pieces of loaf bread
small chicken (cooked)
broth from chicken
turkey juice

Directions:
Make 1 large pan of cornbread.  Mix 3 handfuls {gotta love Big Mama] of cornmeal, 1 egg, salt & pepper, and 2 spoons of oil.  {Teaspoon? Tablespoon? Nope. Just a regular old spoon.}  Add buttermilk and equal parts of water.  Add just enough to “make juicy,” Callie Mae says.  Pour mixture into large iron skillet. Make sure you cover skillet with 3 SPOONS of vegetable oil.  Cook on 450° until brown.

Cut cornbread up into large bowl.  Take juice from turkey and mix with cornbread.  Add cream of chicken, butter, onions, saltines, bread, broth, chicken, salt & pepper.  Whew.  I’m tired already.  Oh, and let that broth cool before pouring or Callie Mae will go pick a hickory stick.  Add remaining eggs, and “make it juicy!”

Mix it all together and throw it into a large, deep glass bowl.  Begin baking at 350°.  When you start to see some bubblin’ on top, turn up the temp a little at a time until it hits 450°.  Cook approximately 1 hour until done.

Hmmm.  I hope I didn’t leave anything out.  Oh well.

Voila!  It’s not for the faint of heart.  But, I cannot imagine a Thanksgiving meal without it.

Now, Kim said we could share a favorite Thanksgiving memory, tradition, game, or food.  And, I chose tradition.  When I told Kris I thought about sharing how Bryan, husband #1…..Wait.  Not insinuating that Bryan was like #1 as in Woo-Hoo, you win the prize.  Just that he was my first husband.  Well, ex-husband.  Follow?  Back to my story.  I thought about sharing how Bryan proposed to me on Thanksgiving Day and how sweet it was.  Kris was all like, “Why don’t we stick to the past 5 years.”  And, I was all like, “Okay, but it was such a sweet memory.”  And, I just dug deeper and deeper.  So here ya go.  Callie Mae’s Dressing.

What’s one of your favorite Thanksgiving memories, traditions, games or foods?

The art of the handwritten letter.

Now that we can text and e-mail “thank you”, “happy birthday”, and “I love you”, do you think the art of the handwritten letter is history?

Three of my Georgia peaches were out visiting a few weeks ago.

letter-wp2

And, let me tell you.  One of ‘em right now is sittin’ at home saying, “Oh, I can’t believe she chose THIS picture.”  All save Kate.  She only checks her e-mail once a year.  All of this to say (and throw in their picture that they’ve been begging me to post) that we had this exact conversation.  No, no.  Not about what pictures flatter and which ones add ten pounds.  We all know that the camera adds at least that.  We talked about the joys of receiving a handwritten letter.

But, here is the thing.  I have saved most of the letters written to me since I was sporting the converse high tops in the 7th grade.   I have saved very few letters sent via the internet gods.  Only in the past year, have I created web folders for these attempts at the human touch.

I’m not pointing fingers.  I love the ease and use of typing then pressing “send.”  But, when I received Jennifer’s handwritten note card in the mail upon her return to G-Town, I suddenly remembered why this lost art is so special.  (Now, Sharon and Kate are scrounging for their stationary.)

As far as thank you notes go, I always try to handwrite every one.  I even made Anna sign her name on thank your cards for her recent birthday gifts.  I have the feeling I took the “JOY” right out of the “ART” with my obsession on her starting her “A” far enough to the left as to leave room for the “N”, “N”, and “A”.  Blessed be the name.  No pun intended.

Do you still send handwritten letters?

Do you still have old letters sent to you from your younger years?

(Necessary Note:  Bonnie Spencer, your posted picture is coming soon.  And, yes.  I still have all of your letters.)
